Meribel is approximately an 9 hour drive from Calais, almost all on motorway. Below is a list of ferry companies and the tunnel for making the journey across the channel.

When self driving to the mountains there are a couple of things you should consider.  We might get snow! In fact everyone wants it to snow but it can be less fun when it dumps down on a busy arrival or departure day so it is best to be prepared.  Always bring chains for your car!  If your car does not have snow tyres, it is a legal requirement in France to have chains with you.  If your car is 4×4 and has snow tyres, you may not need to bring chains but in every other case, we strongly recommend it, even if your car is fitted with snow tyres.  It is so much better to have the chains than to get stuck!!

Car Hire

This has proved to be a favourite option and very cost effective for smaller groups. Car Hire is usually cheaper in France than Switzerland but please note that French hire cars are NOT fitted with winter tyres as standard whereas Swiss hire cars are (i.e. from the Swiss side of Geneva Airport). We therefore always recommend to hire from the Swiss side where possible.

The roads up to resort and in resort are cleared regularly and while snow chains are not always needed, it is a legal requirement in France to have them if your car does not have snow tyres on, so please always include them with your hire.  You never know when we will get that big dump of snow and you wouldn’t want to be without the chains if you need them.

Please see a list of car hire companies below. This list is not exhaustive.
